Lawrence Shankland hysteria is further proof of the huge gap that exists between Champions Celtic and the third force Rangers…
Picture the scene. Celtic finish a second campaign in a row empty handed, and third in the table despite spending night on £40 million quid. What’s more we also managed to miss out on a chance of Champions league qualification, could you imagine the picture being portrayed in the Scottish mainstream media?
Well, it wouldn’t be in a positive way that’s for sure, but that’s what they have done in regards to our Glasgow rivals, who are somehow back in contention to win everything on offer next term.
Free transfer signing apparently a game changerÂ
Why is that? Well it’s due to the signing of a home nation player who is at the moment in time is one of the best centre forwards in European football.
Why would Harry Kane even consider moving to Ibrox? Er, he didn’t but you could be forgiven for thinking so due to the mass hysteria the new signing has created between the SMSM and the Rangers supporters alike.
Now that the domestic campaign is over they are always at their happiest, boasting about this, that and the other for the new season while only winning one title in 15 seasons with Celtic of course winning the rest. That’s all the ones that supporters were allowed to attend in.
Lawrence Shankland is in fact the big signing, with the soon to be 31 year old signing on at the club he holds close to his heart.
A half decent player, but not exactly the quality striker you would be doing cartwheels over. A one trick pony who is behind Lyndon Dkyes in the pecking order in the Scottish national team, that’s the reality of the situation.
Shankland is a good finisher but lacks pace. He will score goals but will keep another signing out of their team. He will also be a big loss to Hearts who knew that this might happen after agreeing an exit clause to retain Shankland after there were no concrete offers for him last summer, despite being a free agent.
Shankland will most likely score goals for the Rangers , especially as he’ll be instantly be promoted to spot kick duty after the departure of James Tavernier, but he lacks the overall all round ability that is required to lead the line at a higher level, especially on the European front.
And on Tavernier’s exit, wasn’t he top of their assists list in the season just ended? He might be a bigger loss than they think.
Can you imagine the uproar if a 31 year old, one who has won nothing of note in his career, whilst being unproven at the highest level was Celtic’s marquee summer signing?
Yeah I think you can, and it wouldn’t be one of joy. The reaction to the Shankland signing is yet another example of the gap that exists between Celtic and the third force in Scottish football from across the city.
While we can enjoy their summer optimism we can’t lose sight of the fact that the loan signings brought in as our own goalscorers have all failed to live up to our hopes rather than expectations. With Daizen Maeda likely to be away we really do – at long last – look to bring in a top striker and that man hopefully is going to be Kasper Hogh, who has been linked with both Celtic and Hearts – the second force in Scottish football – in recent weeks.
Hopefully he’s Celtic bound sooner rather than later.
Just an Ordinary Bhoy

The Glasgow 14 ers are doing their Poundland shopping with Shankland.
Nearly 31 and suffers long lapses in form. It’s only a matter of time before the 49 ers draw their money out of that dead donkey of a club. Saying that I’m looking forward to seeing his forlorn face again at the end of next season.
