Callum McGregor admitted Kelechi Iheanacho’s dramatic late goal against Motherwell left the Celtic skipper in disbelief, claiming it could prove to be the most significant moment he has witnessed during his time at the club.
The Nigerian forward calmly converted amid the controversy surrounding Celtic’s stoppage-time penalty, earning a vital three points that kept the title race firmly in the Hoops’ hands.
Victory means Celtic now only require a win over Hearts on Saturday to clinch the title.
McGregor believes the importance of Iheanacho’s strike is unmatched in his 13 years of playing for Celtic.
He said via Daily Record: “I was honestly stunned by it all. In football you experience so many highs and lows, but that felt different because of what was at stake. I said to Kelechi afterwards that it’s probably the biggest moment I’ve seen since I came into the first team. Everything depended on it.
“When you look at what we might have needed to do this weekend if we hadn’t won, it shows how huge the goal was. Fair play to him because he’s a player who wants responsibility in the biggest moments and he delivered for us. Now the situation is in our hands.”
McGregor also praised Motherwell’s display but felt Celtic deserved the result after digging deep once again.
He added: “It was a tough contest throughout. Motherwell started brightly and caused us problems, but once we scored I thought we began to take control. It was one of those matches where momentum kept shifting between both teams.
“They’re very comfortable in possession and they make you work extremely hard. After everything the lads put into the previous game, mentally and physically, I thought the energy and commitment they showed again was excellent.
“Both sides created chances, but I felt our players stuck at it, kept believing and in the end earned what we deserved.”
