Auston Trusty has heaped praise on teammate Daizen Maeda following the winger’s starring role in Celtic’s vital 3-1 victory over the Ibrox club at Celtic Park.

The American defender completed the full 90 minutes as Celtic claimed a huge 3-1 win in the final Glasgow derby of the season, a result that has dramatically tightened the Premiership title race.

With Hearts now only a point ahead at the summit, the battle for the title is set for a tense conclusion heading into the final two matches of the campaign.

Attention now turns to a crucial midweek fixture list, with Celtic travelling to Fir Park to face Motherwell while league leaders Hearts take on Falkirk at Tynecastle.

Much of the post-match discussion has centred around Maeda, who produced a sensational display against Danny Rohl’s men by scoring twice in the second half.

His opening goal came from close range after reacting quickest to a dangerous delivery from Kieran Tierney, but it was his second strike that stole the headlines.

The Japan international stunned supporters with an acrobatic overhead kick that immediately sparked debate over whether it is the best Celtic derby goal of all-time.

‘Goal of the year’ reckons Trusty

Trusty was full of admiration for Maeda after the match. Speaking via Celtic’s official YouTube channel, the Hoops defender said: “I didn’t know he was going to do that. Goal of the year – obviously, Yang’s already won it – Daizen’s is right up there.

“He’s fantastic, he’s one of the best players I’ve ever played with. Defensively and offensively, you definitely want him on your side.

“When you see someone working their butt off, defensively and offensively, getting into every spot and tracking back, as a number nine making defensive plays in his own box, it only helps the team.”

Daizen made it six goals in four games on Sunday, and has hit form at exactly the right time of the season.
