Former Celtic Chief Executive and Chairman Peter Lawwell was spotted at Easter Road yesterday for the Edinburgh Derby. Lawwell, who left the Celtic role earlier this season, citing an increase in negative attention that he was receiving in this role watched on as Derek McInnes’ Jambos came from behind to beat nine-man Hibs in the final Edinburgh Derby of the season.
Despite appearing to step away from football with his resignation from the Celtic Board, Lawwell remains on the European Football Clubs Association Board as an independent member and it is likely that he will become a regular sight around the grounds.
Lawwell would have been hoping that Hibs could’ve held on despite being reduced by two red cards. However, Blair Spittal’s late winner took Hearts back to the summit of the Premiership table, going three points above Celtic and four above Rangers.
As has been pointed out recently, there is merit in criticism towards the Celtic Board for a number of decisions in recent times but there should also be praise for the success that the club have enjoyed this century, a large part of that is down to Lawwell. However, a number of supporters will point out that his appointment as chairman embodied a lot that was wrong at the club with cronyism rife, impairing decision making.
