The 25-year-old Swedish defender enjoyed a solid campaign in the Eredivisie, making 32 appearances and playing the full 90 minutes in the majority of those. Despite his success in Enschede, a permanent deal is apparently off the table, with Twente unwilling to meet Celtic’s asking price.

Taking to Instagram, Lagerbielke shared an emotional message with Twente fans:

“Tukkers, from the first day arriving in Enschede, I felt at home. Every day I drove to the training ground in Hengelo, I felt excitement. Every day I was around the team and the staff, I felt joy. Every day I put on the Twente shirt, I felt proud. Every day I played in front of you supporters, I felt honoured. And today I feel grateful. Grateful for all of you and for letting me be a part of your family. Bedankt.”

Lagerbielke joined Celtic in summer 2023 with high expectations but struggled to secure regular minutes under manager Brendan Rodgers. With limited appearances in green and white, a loan move was seen as a chance to rebuild confidence and showcase his ability.

A transfer from Celtic seems imminent

Despite returning to Glasgow, the Swedish international is unlikely to stay long. Reports indicate that Lagerbielke has recently switched agencies, now represented by a firm known for successfully negotiating exits from Celtic.

Interest from clubs across Europe is already building, and a permanent transfer elsewhere appears imminent.

Celtic are actively in the market for at least one central defender this summer

Meanwhile, Celtic are actively in the market for at least one central defender this summer. Cameron Carter-Vickers remains the cornerstone of the back line, but questions persist over his long-term partner. While Liam Scales impressed last season, competition with Auston Trusty highlighted the need for reinforcements.

For Lagerbielke, his brief Celtic chapter looks set to close without ever truly opening, but his time in the Eredivisie may well have reignited a promising career elsewhere.
