Kasper Schmeichel defended by teammate following ‘disgusting’ attack

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has received strong backing from his teammates after shocking comments about his physique appeared in the press…

The remarks, which have been widely condemned as “degrading,” came after his performance in Denmark’s match against Portugal, where he saved a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and played through injury.

Danish Players’ Association Condemns “Over the Line” Remarks

A Danish publication disgracefully compared Schmeichel’s weight to that of “a child with polio,” sparking outrage among players and officials. The criticism was met with a firm response from the Danish Players’ Association, with chief Michael Sahl Hansen stating:

“It is way over the line. Hopefully, the journalist is undergoing some serious soul-searching. Because the way of writing about another person is completely wrong. And we in the Players’ Association have to say that clearly and distinctly.”

Schmeichel, who finished the match with an arm injury, has since been seen wearing a sling, adding further concern over his availability for Celtic’s crucial run-in.

Rasmus Falk Slams “Unnecessary” Attacks

Denmark international and FC Copenhagen star Rasmus Falk also came to Schmeichel’s defence, criticizing the language used in the Danish media. As reported by the Daily Record, speaking upon his return to club duties, Falk said:

“I think it’s too degrading. I’d be sick of it if that became the norm for how we talk about each other. I generally feel like everything in life is about behaving properly.

“We are not thin-skinned in this industry, but there are limits to what you have to put up with and what is okay. You can criticize someone, and you can say their performance was not good enough without resorting to all sorts of metaphors. It’s just unnecessary. I feel a bit… why?”

With Schmeichel  facing months on the sidelines, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will be forced to turn to backup goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo for the closing stages of the season. As the Hoops chase another domestic Treble, losing an experienced figure like Schmeichel could be a significant blow.

While criticism of performances is expected in football, the nature of the comments directed at Schmeichel has been widely condemned, with many calling for more respect and professionalism in media coverage.
