Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has been discussing both of his former club’s Champions League prospects…
Speaking to spaceportsweden.com, Sutton revealed that he likes the new Champions League format because Celtic are in a good position!
Speaking of the Hoops, who play away in Zagreb this evening, Sutton shared his delight at the progress that Celtic have made in Europe this season and highlighted the 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig as a defining moment in the campaign so far.
Most control I’ve seen a Celtic team have in a Champions League
“Leipzig, I know they’re not going well in the Champions League, but I think they were second in the Bundesliga when Celtic played them, and that was the most control I’ve seen a Celtic team have in a Champions League game. That was a really big night, an important night for Brendan and his team,” said Sutton.
Sutton believes that Celtic are good enough to go and get a positive result in Croatia tonight, but even if they don’t, thinks a victory over Young Boys will be enough to see them into the play-offs.
“They go to Zagreb on Tuesday, and then Young Boys at home is the one. I think they had a dodgy start, but Zagreb are actually competitive.
Young Boys is the one at home
“Young Boys is the one at home where Celtic fans are thinking that’s the opportunity, and if they don’t take that opportunity they’ll just have to go down and thrash Aston Villa on their own patch. That will be a brilliant game anyway,” said Sutton.
Sutton also backed Aston Villa, who play RB Leipzig away in Germany tonight, to qualify for the last 16 by finishing in the top eight of the league table.

“I’ve not got the table in front of me, but yes, I think they’ll want to make life as easy as possible and do that by qualifying for the automatic promotion by finishing in the top eight. I was at Villa Park, my old team, although the Villa fans wouldn’t remember me.
“I was at Villa Park when they beat Bayern Munich and that was an incredible evening, and Jhon Duran’s goal. I think that they’ve been stretched a lot, their squad, and they had a bit of a dip.
“I think they bounced back, had a couple of wins now but no, they’re really well placed in terms of the Champions League, and should be striving for that top group,” Sutton concluded.
Celtic need one victory to make sure
Sutton’s assessment of Celtic’s situation as things stand is spot on. Celtic need one victory to pretty much make sure. The home game against Young Boys the other side of the bells is obviously the easiest of the three as it’s at Celtic Park.
But missing the chance this evening would be a huge disappointment and a real missed opportunity.
Celtic will also get a huge boost ahead of the Premier Sports Cup Final against theRangers on Sunday with a win in Zagreb.
Let’s do it tonight Celtic!
