Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has announced his retirement from playing. The 38-year-old reached an agreement with Ayr United to depart at the beginning of the month but now, it has been confirmed that his playing days are behind him.

McGeady, a product of Celtic’s youth system, left Paradise in 2010 for Spartak Moscow. The player made over 180 appearances for Celtic and has enjoyed spells with Everton, Preston North End and Sunderland. Now, the ex-£10m player is looking for his next role in football after deciding to hang his boots up.

Despite McGeady’s best days being behind him when he joined Ayr, he was seen as an astute signing by The Honest Men. The move also allowed McGeady to be involved in a role working within the football operations of the Championship club.

It is expected that he will likely take a role in football operations as opposed to going allowing the more traditional route of coaching.
