So despite Scotland’s dismal run of results this year the for Celtic defender reckons that Clarke more than deserves more time to turn things around. Mulgrew also accuses Clarke’s critics of having short memories, pointing out that it’s only been Steve Clarke who has managed to take Scotland to major finals this century and he’s done it twice.

Mulgrew names his choice as next Scotland boss after Steve Clarke
“It’s a really hard one (who will one day replace Steve Clarke). I was talking about this last night and nobody really springs to mind to be honest with you,” Charlie Mulgrew said, speaking to Gambling.com. “I think that if he was to ever leave, I think that I would like to see a possession based high-press manager in there to see how Scotland would do. It’s not been something Scotland have done for a long time.
Possession based approach
“I think under Steve Clarke, there’s been spells of possession because we have the players that are playing at top clubs that have possession. Scott McTominay was at Man United and he’s now at Napoli, Billy Gilmour was at Brighton and he’s now at Napoli too. We’ve got Andy Robertson, John McGinn, Ryan Christie – players that play in possession based teams at the top level of the game.
A forward thinking coach
“So I would like to see a manager that comes in with that sort of philosophy who wants to have possession. Similar to what Craig Bellamy is doing right now at Wales. It doesn’t have to be someone who has got a lot of experience, but somebody who’s got a possession based approach, presses high and is a forward thinking coach.
Shaun Maloney fits the bill
“I think somebody like Shaun Maloney would be a really good Scotland manager. He’s worked under Roberto Martinez at Belgium, and I think he’s a real forward thinking coach that likes to have possession. So somebody like that I think would be really good for Scotland.”
