67 years ago today saw Celtic record one of the greatest results in our history in the league cup final at Hampden…

Rangers were our opponents, and Celtic despite being holders of the trophy after beating Partick Thistle the previous year, were seen as underdogs against an Ibrox side who were reigning league champions and overwhelming favourites to lift the cup, but this being a cup final, anything could happen.

So it would prove as Celtic not only beat the Ibrox side, but hammered them into oblivion as we ran amok and recorded a record scoreline for a cup final in the UK. One that still stands to this day.

Celtic piled on the agony while putting on the style

Celtic piled on the agony while putting on the style. As not 1 but 2, then 3, then 4, then 5, then 6 then, boom 7 goals went in, with Rangers having only one solitary goal in reply.

Billy McPhail grabbed a hat trick, Neil Mochan grabbed a brace, with Sammy Wilson and Willie Fernie grabbing the other goals to cement themselves in Celtic folklore.

    A truly magical experience

The fact that this result is still heralded to this very day speaks volumes of what Jimmy McGrory and his players achieved. Imagine how it must have felt for those lucky supporters who were at the match or at home or in the pubs listening on the wireless. A truly magical experience.
