Walking onto the pitch at Parkhead in front of a roaring crowd, McCowan experienced a moment many players can only dream of. However, debuting in such a high-stakes match could easily have been overwhelming. Thankfully, the presence of Celtic captain Callum McGregor provided the perfect support for the young midfielder.

McGregor’s Leadership Shines Through

As McCowan entered the match as a second-half substitute, McGregor immediately made a beeline for the new signing from Dundee. In a gesture of leadership and camaraderie, McGregor offered McCowan words of encouragement, ensuring that the young player felt supported and confident during his first taste of one of football’s most intense rivalries.

Reflecting on the moment, as reported by Football Scotland, McGregor shared what he said to his new teammate: “He’s got massive quality. When you come into a game like that, it’s always good to have your mates around you and just look after them and the new guys, just settle them in. I just said to him, ‘Go and play, you’ve got massive quality, just go and run about, I’ll be with you, so let’s just go’. He was fantastic when he came on.”

A Promising Start for McCowan

Thrown into the deep end with high expectations and immense pressure, McCowan didn’t just survive—he thrived. McGregor praised his performance, noting how well the 22-year-old handled the big occasion. “To be thrown into a game like that, big expectation, big pressure, he was excellent,” said the captain.

McGregor also highlighted the importance of having a strong Scottish and British core within the team, emphasizing how crucial it is for new players to understand the club’s culture, standards, and the relentless pressure to win. “He’s technically very good, can get about the pitch, and hopefully now we bring him in, show him the system, he learns, he gets better from there,” McGregor added. “But he’s certainly got all the attributes to do well, and he’s in a great group to learn as well. I’ve got no worries for him.”

“You probably look at the success the club have had over a number of years now – there’s always been a really good Scottish, British core. It’s important when the guys come in, they understand what the club’s about, the standards, the pressure to win and play well.

A Shrewd Signing for Celtic?

McCowan’s seamless integration into the team and his composed debut suggest that he could be a valuable asset for Celtic moving forward. As a lifelong fan of the club, pulling on the green and white Hoops was a dream realized, and his performance indicates that he may well become a key figure in Celtic’s continued dominance of Scottish football.
