Alistair Johnston is in line for a new improved contract offer, which he richly deserves, but one man who also deserves a new deal at Celtic is our left-back Greg Taylor…
Greg Taylor is out of contract next summer and much like AJ he’s more than worthy of a new deal. Contrary to some supporters beliefs, the Scotland man has not been approached about a contract extension, or so I understand.
Greg has his critics
Greg has his critics, but he’s been a steady performer in his time at the club and has played under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou, and currently Brendan Rodgers, and every single one of them has regarded Greg as a first pick, which speaks volumes for his ability.
He may not be the most talented player in the world, but Greg does his job without a minimum of fuss while always giving one hundred percent commitment. For instance he was outstanding in our recent 3-0 win over theRangers at Celtic Park.
A valuable asset to the squad
He’s a valuable asset to the squad and that should be reflected in the offer of a new deal. If anyone deserves a new deal then it’s Greg Taylor. Hopefully the club will do just that sometime soon.
He’s too good an asset to gamble on letting go for next to nothing and he will be able to speak to interested parties come January. To his credit Greg has not let the uncertainty of his contract situation affect his game.
Alex Valle was brought in on a season long loan from Barcelona last month but there is no option to buy the highly rated youngster. Surely Celtic aren’t going to let both left backs walk out the door come next May?
Collecting much bigger pay packets
Greg Taylor joined from Kilmarnock and is on a relatively low salary at Celtic in comparison to his teammates in the dressing room. Some players who seldom, if ever feature are collecting much bigger pay packets.
That’s something that Taylor should understandably be anxious to sort in his new contract and perhaps that is the reason for the inaction or even stalemate.
Maybe Brendan has other ideas and sees this as an opportunity to change the personnel, yet the left-back position is traditionally one of the hardest to fill. Taylor’s agents will know that and will not be short of alternatives should a parting of the ways happens.
It would be Celtic’s loss in my view.
