Some white smoke at last. Arne Engels set to become Celtic’s record signing as clubs reach agreement on the transfer…

Finally some white smoke on the transfer front. Sky Sports along with various other outlets have reported that Celtic and Augsburg have reached an agreement on the sale of Belgian midfielder Arne Engels.

Engels had been the top target for Brendan Rodgers for a few weeks now and finally the Celtic manager seems to have landed his man subject to a medical and paperwork.

It represents a serious bit of business by the club as the fee of just under £11 million will be the most the club has ever spent on one individual player.

The Board have backed Brendan

We criticise the Celtic board on a regular basis myself included, and deservedly so, but you’ve got to applaud them for splashing the cash and backing Brendan in his quest to bring quality to the club. It certainly shows the how persuasive the Irishman is when it comes to such matters, considering the history of our board when it comes to parting with money!

Hopefully Arne is the first of a few new arrivals

Hopefully Arne can be the start of a few new additions coming into the club in the next few days, but one things for sure is that we definitely mean business by spending a huge amount on a player of the calibre of Arne.

On the deal it appears to be just under £11m upfront, with another £2m in agree add-ons and a 20% sell-on fee!

TRANSLATION – “Arne Engels is moving to Celtic for a fixed fee of 11 million plus 2 million in guaranteed bonuses. FC Augsburg is securing a 20 percent share of the resale. Salary at Celtic: 2.5-3 million per year.”

Look at that salary!

  1. If such a salary is correct then are we really looking at 50K per week?
Even in euros, that is possibly way above our current pay structure in place?
With the massive reduction made with offloading of so many, draining our wage budget for the past number of seasons?
Then such salaries are well affordable to ourselves, by getting a squad in position that warrants the wage budget in a far better manner than it has been to date?
Hopefully a sign of things to come now, especially as waited long enough for the wage budget to be used in a far better manner than it has been for many a long year to date imo?

  2. That’s in euros…The Germans wouldn’t comment on pounds…divide 2.5 million by 1.17 fir a truer equivalent…
