Strachan draws Owen Beck comparisons to Andy Robertson amid Celtic interest

Celtic remain keen on signing Owen Beck from Liverpool and former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, through his role as Technical Director at Dundee FC, is the ideal person to ask about Beck who impressed during two spells on loan at Dens Park last season…

Clever’ Owen Beck has modelled his game on Andy Robertson

“With Owen Beck, you can take all the data away from the player and it will tell you this: he gets forward, his engine’s good, it’s all good,” Gordon Strachan told Lord Ping. “What it won’t tell you is that Owen is a great kid with wonderful personality. He has a great team ethic, and he can’t do enough for the people around him. His first thought is always the team, and I like that in younger players.”

Strachan added: “He’s made himself into a better footballer. He’s clever. He’s watched Andy Robertson and has modelled parts of his game on his. I’m not saying that he is the new Andy Robertson or he will have a career like Andy’s, I’m saying that he’s picked up a lot of good habits from him.

“That means he’s intelligent. That means he can pick things up and develop as a player,” the former Celtic boss said.

Strachan compares Celtic target Owen Beck’s playing style to Lisandro Martinez and Andy Robertson

“At Dundee, as the season went on, he got stronger. He worked on his upper body strength, and a little bit like Lisandro Martinez, he’s not the biggest, but that doesn’t mean you can bully or intimidate him. He reads the game well and understands where to put his body to be the most effective defender.

“Andy was like that as a kid as well, because he was slight. He’d try to nip in and win the ball, he’d get into battles, but he’s a lot cuter than that now. He’s clever. He knows when to stand off and he knows when to get close,” Strachan said.

“Unfortunately, Owen got an injury when he came back to us. He’s a good player. He could be a very good player. There’s a couple of teams in the Championship that could do with a player like Owen Beck, that’s for sure.”

Or maybe Brendan Rodgers will get this one across the line and bring Owen Beck to Celtic at the second time of asking? We’ll know for sure sometime over the nine days…

  1. Would have thought if Beck really was in the plans of Rodgers for the LB position, especially with the fee quoted, then more noise about a potential deal would have actually taken place by now imo?
The stumbling block still possibly remains upon what Rodgers has in mind regarding Taylor?
Any potential signing would want to know the answer to the question at present, but what is the actual answer?
Many within our support would be looking for a potentially better player than Taylor?
Yet for such a decision to become a reality, then any potential player could well be looking for assurances from Rodgers that such a situation exists for the position available?
So is Beck going to be regarded as a potential upgrade player than Taylor at present?
Still not convinced that is the case regarding Beck, and far from clear on where Taylor remains within the longer term plans of Rodgers regarding the position also?
For a situation that has been ongoing for well over a year now, it remains a ridiculous situation that we find ourselves in a position where a solution to the LB position issue, seems no closer to getting resolved than where we were a year ago?
