Celtic today made a second, improved bid for Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels, which according to Sky Sports is for £9m with additional add-ons that should see the fee paid exceed the £10m mark.
The Bundesliga club rejected Celtic’s opening lowball offer of £6.5m but Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson has responded a second offer than meets the reported valuation that Augsburg has set.
Brendan Rodgers is determined to seal the signing of the 20 year old as his replacement for Matt O’Riley and believes he can develop Engels to achieve a significantly larger transfer fee a few years from now. That should be an attractive option for Augsburg if they insert a sell-on clause in the deal.
Engels is keen on the move to Celtic
Celtic has already agreed personal terms with the player’s agent and Engels himself is very keen on a move to Celtic, with the lure of the Champions League football on offer and the chance to work under Rodgers.
Anthony Joseph at Sky Sports this afternoon provided the following update:
‘Celtic are making an improved offer of £9m for Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels. Augsburg rejected Celtic’s first offer of £6.5m & aren’t keen to sell. However, Celtic are pushing for a deal with Brendan Rodgers very keen to sign Engels. Talks continue,’ Anthony Joseph, Sky Sports
