Kyogo set to remain at Celtic despite Manchester City rumours

Kyogo Furuhashi has been a standout performer for Celtic since his arrival from Japan in 2021…

With 73 goals in 136 appearances, the forward has established himself as one of the top goal scorers in Scottish football, quickly becoming a fan favourite at Paradise. So, when rumours surfaced last week that Manchester City was showing interest in Kyogo, it understandably caused concern among Celtic supporters, especially with the today’s departure of Matt O’Riley to Brighton.

Man City Unlikely to Pursue Kyogo

Fortunately for Celtic fans, it appears that Manchester City will not be making a late bid for Kyogo before the transfer window closes.

Sam Lee, the Athletic reporter who last week reported on City’s interest, provided an update over the weekend indicating that the move is now unlikely.

Lee’s comments came after David Ornstein, also from The Athletic, reported that City manager Pep Guardiola had decided against pursuing another striker, including Copenhagen’s Orri Oskarsson, who was also on City’s shortlist. Lee confirmed on social media that neither Oskarsson nor Kyogo are expected to join the English champions this summer.

Brendan Rodgers on the transfer speculation

When asked about the speculation surrounding Kyogo’s future, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers remained calm and confident. Rodgers revealed that City had not made any contact with Celtic regarding a potential deal for Kyogo and downplayed the rumours as typical of the final stages of the transfer window.

Even Pep Guardiola has suggested that City’s transfer business might be complete following the signing of Ilkay Gundogan, further easing concerns about a last-minute swoop for Kyogo.

Kyogo Likely to Stay Put—For Now

While the transfer window can be unpredictable, all signs currently point to Kyogo staying at Celtic. With no ongoing negotiations and both Rodgers and Guardiola playing down the rumours, Celtic fans can breathe a sigh of relief. However, as always, until the window officially closes, nothing can be taken for granted.
