“I don’t need him to score forty a season,” Brendan Rodgers on Kyogo

Brendan Rodgers reckons that his one and only Celtic striker has finally got the message about exactly what is expected from him from the Celtic manager.

Perhaps Kyogo last season was too concerned about his goals tally being down and accordingly felt he was letting the side down and also failing to impress the new manager who replaced Ange Postecoglou in June 2023.

After the 2-0 victory over Hibs at Easter Road that keeps Celtic on top of the league, Brendan Rodgers had this to say about Kyogo.

It maybe took him a bit of time to understand

“I don’t need him to score forty a season. It maybe took him a bit of time to understand, for me, that it’s not always on the last line of defence. I want him to play the space rather than the position.

“We all know he can go in behind like you see with the first goal today, but the modern game, especially when you have man to man marking – it creates that possibility on the inside.

He should have scored today

“If your midfielders are creating the space then the obvious pass is through the middle but you need the striker to always be available and not be drawn away from the ball. I think he’s playing the space really well, he’s running behind, he’s coming short, he’s linking up. He should have scored today, but don’t blame him because he’s playing really really well,” the Celtic manager said.
