Celtic’s being ‘held back’ says former Manchester United coach

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes that Celtic are HELD BACK by the overall standard in the Scottish Premiership…

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest SPFL odds, Meulensteen said: “Every time I have visited Celtic Park or go to [the]Rangers or any other club, it’s vibrant. Sometimes Celtic and [the]Rangers are held back by the league they play in, they could hit much higher levels if they had better opposition week in week out and I think that is why they have fallen short in Europe.

Suddenly they get hit by much stronger teams

“They don’t meet that kind of opposition and suddenly they get hit by much stronger teams from abroad.”

In the last decade, Celtic have won 23 trophies. An incredible feat but one that some people, such as Meulensteen, see as a concern. Questions over the quality of the opposition have been asked for years, especially with the Hoops’ lacklustre European performances.

With the new Champions League format, supporters are hopeful that Celtic can have a good showing going forward. With eight games against eight different teams, the chances of knockout football in the Champions League have never been higher.

Celtic continue to dominate domestically, topping the league after only two games, with their rivals trailing by two points. Brendan Rodgers’ side looks to be unstoppable and thriving this season, rather than held back…
