Former Celtic star Morten Wieghorst has been named as the new Head Coach of the Denmark National Team after Kasper Hjulmand decided to quit. Hjulmand, who had held the role for four years, decided to step aside after his side exited at the Last 16 stage of the Euros in Germany, losing to the hosts.
Now, Hjulmand has been replaced by his No.2, Wieghorst, for their upcoming fixtures on a deal until November. Thereafter, the Danish FA will evaluate and appoint a permanent successor to Hjulmand. This means that the ex-Celtic midfielder could earn the chance to get the job on a permanent basis if results go his way.
Not only will Hjulmand be keeping a close eye on Celtic for Matt O’Riley, who was a surprise omission from the 26-man squad for the Euros, but also for Denmark’s skipper Kasper Schmeichel, who joined the Scottish Champions on a one-year deal.
Weghorst spoke about O’Riley at the Player of the Year Event at the Hydro back in May and was full of praise for the midfielder. Hopefully, O’Riley will see a Celtic ally in the National Team that can show that he can still play for the Denmark National Team while plying his trade in Scotland.
