Celtic FC Women’s favourable Champions League draw, Rangers get Arsenal

Celtic FC Women will face KuPS Kuopio in the Round One of the Women’s Champions League. The game is set to take place on the 4 September with a venue yet to be decided.

Should we overcome KuPS, we will then face FC Gintra or Agarista CSF Anenii Noi in the final of Group 3. We have avoided some good teams with this draw as we could have had the unlucky pick to be facing the likes of Benfica.

So, how does this format work? Let me explain.

43 teams will play in this mini-tournament, with 11 groups being drawn to decide the ties. Each group’s games will take place in a single venue for that group, with no home or away legs. 11 finals will take place and the winners of these finals will progress to round 2. Seven places in the Women’s Champions League group stage will be up for grabs in round 2.

Should Celtic make it to round 2 of the tournament, the draw will be made on the 9^th of September, with the first match being played on either the 18^th or the 19^th of that month.

Certainly not a bad draw! I think a lot of the supporters will be happy and confident going into these games, but we can’t underestimate them and I’m sure Elena Sadiku will keep her squad on their toes.

But it could always be worse. If you’re interested in what’s happening on the other side of the city, our rivals have drawn Arsenal, who finished third in the Women’s Super League last season. I wouldn’t be holding my breath…in fact I expect a skelping in this one.
