Mark Warburton must surely be the man to replace Gareth Southgate

With Gareth Southgate now gone, and former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou ruling himself out, there’s only one man for the job…surely that man is the Ibrox Loaf with the Magic Hat, Mark Warburton…

Gareth Southgate this week stepped down as England manager after yet more heartbreak at a major finals. The hunt is now on for his successor and it will take a very talented as well as brave boss to take on the role.

Step forward Mark Warburton, the Magic Hat himself. Warbs was touted as a future England manager by the Scottish Mainstream Media nine years ago after steering theRangers to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in their history.

Warburton had the Scottish media pack purring

His ‘swashbuckling’ style of football had theRangers supporters and the Scottish media pack purring as the managerial magician and his players blew away the opposition in the Scottish Championship as they romped to the league title, not to mention winning the iconic Petrofac Cup, in an unforgettable afternoon at Hampden against Peterhead.

Unfortunately a historic treble was cruelly snatched away as fellow Championship side Hibs, managed by another Englishman, ex-Celtic defender Alan Stubbs,  beat them in the Scottish Cup Final.

Things didn’t go according to plan for Warburton, thanks to Brendan Rodgers and his Invincibles

But Warbs had achieved the Holy Grail of promotion to the Scottish Premiership and wrote himself into theRangers history as the first ever man to manage them in the top flight.

He was hotly tipped by all and sundry to win ‘55’ but despite having a Magic Hat it only seemed to work in the lower leagues and he didn’t possess a Time Machine.

It all of course went pear shaped and stale as Warbs and his Magic Hat were confined to the bin by Brendan Rodgers and his history making Celtic side who won an unsurpassed Invincible treble.

There is no shame in that though and Warbs was still highly regarded down south due to his footballing philosophy. He would go on to manage Nottingham Forest and QPR after he found out watching the television one Friday evening that he had submitted a resignation latter which theRangers had accepted. He must have been lost for words.

Warbs is currently out of the game

Warbs has currently been out of the game for two years, but surely England should be looking at a man of his talents and stature in their bid to replace Gareth Southgate? After all we were constantly told that he was the future saviour of English football by the Scottish hacks and the Ibrox hordes.
