The first ‘La Gran Muralla’ – All the best, David Marshall

Former Celtic goalkeeper David Marshall has time on his career at the age of 39.

David famously broke through at Celtic under Martin O’Neill when he was thrown into a UEFA cup game at the Nou Camp against Barcelona in 2004 with Rab Douglas unavailable through suspension.

    A nerve wracking occasion

David who was only 18 at the time and with relatively little first team experience was thrown into the firing line against Ronaldinho and co at the famous old ground of the Catalan giants.

Even the most experienced of pros have wilted under the intense pressure of playing the star studded Barcelona on their home turf. So for 18 year old David it would have been a very nerve wracking occasion.

    An array of spectacular saves

But David kept his cool and thanks to a solid defence in front of him, including fellow youngster John Kennedy, David had a game to remember.

Even when the defence was breached by the magic of the Barca superstars, David was a giant and kept them at bay as he produced an array of spectacular saves to keep them at bay.

The game finished goalless and Celtic recorded a famous win as they advanced to the next round. David was quite rightly hailed a hero, and could have called time on his career that very night a very happy man.

David of course would go on to have a career that spanned two decades. David never really cemented his place as Celtic number one, but he managed to make 50 appearances for the club winning four honours.

    A Scotland legend

David would go on to have a fine career down south with Norwich, Cardiff, Hull, Wigan, Derby, and QPR before heading back up to Scotland to play for Hibs where he finished his career.

He also earned 47 caps for Scotland and played at the euros in 2021. A tournament that the Scots reached thanks to David’s decisive penalty save in shoot out win over Serbia in the play offs.
