Celtic hero Peter Grant has suggested that Brendan Rodgers consider the idea of signing the former Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea as a replacement for Joe Hart.
With the season now coming to a close and the summer transfer window close to opening next Friday, Brendan Rodgers has several decisions ahead of him regarding changes to his squad.
Some big players, such as Matt O’Riley may be sold this Summer, which could leave various positions vulnerable.
One position Brendan already knows he needs to buy for is a goalkeeper. With the conclusion of this season, Joe Hart announced his retirement from football, hence leaving the Hoops without their starting keeper. Although there are options such as Scott Bain waiting on the sidelines, it would be wise in any case to get another keeper in.
Peter Grant’s suggestion
Peter Grant has suggested that the solution to Brendan’s goalkeeping problems may lie in the signing of David de Gea. The former Spanish international is currently a free agent and without a club, following his exit from Manchester United last year.
Training with non-league teams close to where he lives, it’s clear that David has no intention of retiring just yet, and could be an excellent signing for Brendan Rodgers if he chooses to pursue the 33-year-old.
Speaking to Go Radio’s football show, Peter Grant had this to say: “I’ve got to throw one out there. I look at David de Gea, he’s been training non-league in England. And I’m thinking ‘there’s someone like David de Gea there, a club like Celtic, European football. Would that excite him?’
“Okay, it will cost you a few shillings. But if he’s not going to the likes of Saudi Arabia, because no doubt that’s where he’d get the most money. But if he’s taken a year out and all of a sudden wants to get back – big nights at Celtic Park, eight Champions League matches. Would that be something that excites him?
“But that’s somebody I’d be looking at. That’s the sort of personality you’re probably going to have to replace Joe Hart with.”
David de Gea is a keeper of extreme class and has made some exceptional saves. With the departure of Joe Hart, it could be hard to find a man better than David to play between Celtic’s sticks.
