Peter Grant backs Celtic defender for Euro 2024 start

Peter Grant has given his thoughts on the Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston and has revealed that he backs Ralston for the starting right-back spot in the Scottish squad over Ross McCrorie.

Although Celtic’s season has now drawn to a close following their 1-0 Scottish Cup victory over theRangers, many of the Hoops still have a busy Summer ahead of them. Many of the Celtic players have Euro 2024 to look forward to before the pre-season kicks off.

Many of the Scottish players in the Celtic squad, including captain Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor, James Forrest, and Anthony Ralston have all been named to Steve Clarke’s provision Euro squad, and are expected to be named in Clarke’s final EURO 2024 squad, which will be officially named tomorrow.

However it looks like former Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who is now at Hearts and theRangers defender John Souttar will be the two players to drop out of the larger provisional squad.

Peter Grant’s opinion

When discussing the starting right-back for Scotland ahead of EURO 2024, Celtic hero Peter Grant commented that Ralston’s playing style should favour how Scotland plays, so he should be given the nod for the starting position over competition Ross McCrorie. Speaking to the Go Radio Football Show, Grant said…

“I still think, if it’s me, I’d be starting Tony Ralston if you’re playing with wing-backs. That’s not because of the Celtic connection; I just feel Tony Ralston gets forward well, delivers, one vs one defending, he’s strong, aggressive, and he defends his back post well.

“I think if Scotland drops into the back five or the ball is going down the opposite side, I think Tony does that well and defends his back area.”

Scotland is set to face Germany in the opening match of Euro 2024 on the 14 of June. Scotland has just one final warm-up match against Finland tomorrow to get the squad ready ahead of the opener.

With Steve Carke’s final squad still to be named, it is unclear who will be handed the starting position for the opening match against Germany. With it still hanging in the balance, we must hope that Ralston impresses Clarke either on the pitch against Finland or in training for him to be given a start.
