The Scottish skipper, Andy Robertson is expected to break George Young’s record on Friday as the most-capped Scottish captain.
With Euro 2024 set to start in just over a week’s time, Scotland is set to face Finland in their final warm-up match before the start of the European Championships on 14 June.
Andy Robertson will likely captain the Scottish squad put out by the Scottish manager Steve Clarke tomorrow evening as Scotland take on Finland. Following this, it would mean that Robertson has achieved 49 caps as Scottish captain, which would overtake George Young’s record of 48 caps.
Even more impressive
This is even more impressive considering that the Liverpool star has only had 70 caps for Scotland in total, following his contribution to Scotland’s 2-0 victory over Gibraltar on Monday. This means that Robbo has captained the Scottish team for 70% of his international games.
With Euro 2024 rapidly approaching, Robbo’s involvement in the Scottish squad will be crucial for Scotland to perform at its best. With that said, other experienced leaders, such as Callum McGregor, John McGinn, James Forrest and Kieran Tierney will likely join Andy Robertson on the pitch, so he won’t be left to lead Scotland alone.
You can’t win them all
Although his time at Celtic was short, Robertson was part of the Celtic Youth squad and remains a huge fan of our club. Due to concerns over his size, he was released by Celtic at the U15 level, a bad mistake but these things can happen. His career then took him to Queens Park, then to Dundee United, then to Hull FC, then finally to Liverpool, where he has shined, even winning a Champions League medal.
At this point, it’s fair to say that the Celtic Academy got that one wrong but they have also got so many right and you can’t win them all!
