Ex-Celt and SPFL cult hero signs for Annan

Former Celtic midfielder Paul McGowan has been announced by Annan Athletic. The SPFL cult hero was infamous for off-field antics while producing some brilliant moments on the pitch.

Now, McGowan is headed for Dumfries & Galloway to play in League One with the Galabankies.

The 36-year-old spent last season at Cove Rangers but has now signed up with Annan. McGowan started his career with Celtic, joining the club at age 12 and signing a deal aged 16. McGowan broke onto the scene making his debut under Gordon Strachan in September 2007. He held, until 2019, the record for being the last Celtic player to score and assist in Europe with the feat being achieved in the 2009 fixture against Rapid Vienna.

The player left Celtic for St Mirren in the search for regular football. McGowan has had a number of off-field issues and has been known for some erratic behaviour.
