Well done to Elena Sadiku and her Celtic FC Women’s side as they made history by winning the club’s first ever league title yesterday afternoon at Celtic Park with a 1-0 win over Hibs.
But they certainly made us all sweat in the sweltering head at Paradise. It took a 90th minute goal from Amy Gallacher to defeat Hibs and give Celtic the three points needed to break theRangers hearts over at Broadwood. They were 4-0 up and listening intently to what was happening at Celtic Park, praying for the final whistle.
Goal Difference Mattered
Despite theRangers winning and finishing on the same point total as Celtic, the Ghirls had a far superior goal differential so were deservedly crowned Champions.
This Celtic team have been consistent throughout the season. Their firepower led by our top scorer, the brilliant Amy Gallacher, has proved the difference as the season reached its conclusion.
Some of the football they have played has been a joy to watch. They have won games by a massive margin on more than a few occasions by playing football the Glasgow Celtic way.
Players such as Amy, Murphy Agnew, Caitlin Hayes, Natasha Flint and Kit Loferski, and will undoubtedly hog the limelight as their craft and goals have proved ever so vital in the title win.
But players such Shen Mengyu, Natalie Ross Chloe Craig and Kelly Clark who has the honour of being the first ever skipper of Celtic FC Women to lift a league title have been just as important in our success, as has our brilliant goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty.
A special shout out to Fran Alonso
And a special shout out to Fran Alonso who may have left at Christmas, but he made a massive contribution to the title win in the first half of the season. He started the ball rolling before his replacement Elena Sadiku continued his hard work to do the most difficult part by getting Celtic over the line. She did that brilliantly.
In the first four games of the league campaign Celtic FC Women scored 30 goals and conceded just one and that enormous goal difference advantage turned out to be the decisive factor in the destination of the title.
Both Celtic FC Women and theRangers had exactly the same number of wins (26), draws (4) and defeats (2) to both finish on 82 points.
Celtic’s goal difference though was +108 to theRangers +95 and that, my friends, is why Celtic FC Women are the Scottish Champions.
7624 supporters at Celtic Park
Every single player and member of the management team deserves great credit for creating history and making Celtic FC Women the champions of Scotland. Every single supporter of the women’s team deserves recognition too, including the 7624 supporters at Celtic Park yesterday afternoon to see history being made. It’s a day that they’ll never forget.
Congratulations to all involved, you throughly deserve it, especially you Amy G!
