Enjoy Rocco’s hat-trick as much as the Italian commentators…

A great night for Ireland’s Under 21s and for Celtic’s Rocco Vata, but please can he get some game-time, Brendan? It was a hat-trick for Celtic forward Rocco Vata last night, a player that scores at every level he’s played at and is increasingly admired in Italian football.  But he wants to PLAY for Celtic and the ball is in Brendan’s court…

    A huge talent

Rocco Vata is a huge talent, the most impressive forward to come through the Celtic Academy in a long, long  time. Back in the 1980s Billy McNeill had no hesitation playing a young Charlie Nicholas and for a brief spell while at Celtic he looked like the best home-grown star since Kenny Dalglish.

    Champagne Charlie

Cesar had three strikers in that squad, Nicholas, Frank McGarvey and George McCluskey and found a way to play them all. It was a Celtic team that an always seemed to be a couple of quality signings away from greatness and it never reached it’s potential. The old board and all that. Cesar was treated disgracefully, at the time he left to join Manchester City he was the FIFTH highest page manager in the Scottish Premier League.

    Creaney, Donnelly or Johnston?

Anyway since Charlie Nicholas who has been the best home-grown forward coming into the first team? Simon Donnelly? Maybe Gerry Creaney? There are not many to choose from. Mikey Johnston was a great hope when he broke through but it looks like he’s not going to make it at Celtic.

    Vata has the POTENTIAL

The point is that Rocco Vata has the POTENTIAL and surely to goodness there has been plenty of opportunities already this season to have given the Bhoy his chance? Games are now must win, but he’s a goalscorer, he can play wide, bring him off the bench and let’s get that contract signed.

The issue appears to be the pathway to the first team when he is apparently going to get that elsewhere. Daniel Kelly is getting minutes and a new contract, the longer this goes on with Rocco the more likely is he’ll see his future elsewhere.

And make no mistake the boy wants to play for Celtic.

    Vata has the POTENTIAL

The photograph of Kenny Dalglish shown above is from an exclusive collection of forgotten photographs from the 1970s we published on Celtic Shorts last night which you can enjoy by clicking on the link below. The games are all from the opening weeks of the 1975/76 season.

Aberdeen at home and Hearts at Tynecastle in the League Cup section August 1975. Rangers at Ibrox (end August) and Dundee at home (early September) were the opening two League games in the SPL 19-team League era. These photographs have never been published before.
